The incredibleness of Oscar

Today my little boy Oscar died. He'd been going downhill slowly for a couple of weeks, staggering around one day, and then bouncing back the next. Over the last few days, though, he lost his ability to walk and use the litter box, and then yesterday, he somehow managed to get downstairs and wedge himself into a tiny space between boxes in the storage room. I think he was doing that thing cats do when they go off into the woods to die. I brought him back to his room, and today, it was clear that his time had come. I took him to our vet so he could go to sleep peacefully. So painfully sad.

When we rescued Oscar from the shelter about a year and a half ago, we knew he'd had a tough life and a ton of health problems. We wanted to make it so he could live the rest of his years in the lap of luxury, and he did. What we didn't count on was how much we would come to love him, and how much he would enrich our lives. He was only 13, and I wish he could have lived with us for at least another five years. Would that be too much to ask?

Oscar was an incredible cat. I miss him terribly.

  1. Oh, Momlette. I'm so sorry to hear that. I had no idea Oscar Hammerpants was even sick. Sad news.
I hope he's still drooling and purring and meowing wherever he is now.
Thanks for taking in an old fellow and giving the best time of his life. I know he appreciates it, and the whole fam appreciates you for your obvious care and effort.

  2. Oh no Momlette! Poor Oscar. I know Grigio and Yoshimi will treat him well in that great big litter box in the sky. He had such a great last year and a half with you and Bob, your love for him was infectious.

  3. Sweet little Oscar. 13 years is not long enough for such a great cat, and 1 1/2 years is certainly not long enough for him to be pampered the way he deserved by you and Bob. I think he was the luckiest cat in the world, though, to have come to your house to live out his final years. And what a big heart you have for taking him in! Who knew what a great, furry cat was hidden in that poor little cat at the shelter!

  4. Oh no! Oh, moo, I'm so sorry. What a sweet little guy Oscar was. All I can say is that you saved him and gave him an amazing life. You FOUGHT to take the kid home, even with his lack of hair and illnesses and advanced age. Not many people would ever do that, so you are certainly are a hero because you gave him an amazing year and a half he wouldn't have had. ): I'm so sad...Phantom will bunk with him and show him the ropes it amazing cat heaven for sure.
